Question: not having worked with a tail vice bench before, how much play should there be when using it. I have a bench where you can "jiggle" the block up and down with a play of about 1/2". Just seems like a lot of slop compared to the front vice. Words of wisdom? Thanks.
Astralan, there should not be play in a tail vise like that. Well, I should say there should not be in mine. I do not know if you have a similar one, but here is something I can relate that might help you: When I moved, the movers took the tail vise off my bench. After I put it back together, the tail vise had way too much play in it (up and down, like you explained). After some inspecting on the vise, I found there was a bolt that they loosened that I did not catch when I put it back together.
Check out the vise and make sure everything is tight and in position where it should be.
