Hi gents. Someone is selling a powermatic 6” jointer model 054 with a 3/4 hp motor for $400. I’m guessing it’s at least 10-12 years old and looks to be in great shape (according to the pictures). Does anyone other than me think $400 is a bit steep for this jointer? Is 3/4 horse enough power considering new 6” jointers seem to come with at least a 1hp motor?

Here is a copy of the manual I came across at":
Looks a lot like my Jet 6” which was same vintage: Taiwan head, maybe US base/motor(?). Powermatic, in very good condition, for $400 does not sound out of line, and may be a good (to very good) buy. I’d seriously consider it. I know that does not help much, but maybe someone that owns/owned one will chime in.
As far as 3/4 hp goes, that would not bother me at all: I work in the 1/32” to 1/64” range nearly all the time, so if you are not hogging off material, you should be fine.

Have your say...
