Topic tags/keywords: miter saw

At my favorite store: Harbor Freight.
It looks fantastic!
Item : 69684
I already have a double compound miter saw , if not this one would immediately be mine.
Certainly no one can beat the price, $119.99 on sale next week.
I had HF sliding miter saws in the past and they were working very well.

sounds like a trip is in order…I’ve been looking for a saw to keep in the house…it’s a long trip across the ice rink (my driveway) to nibble a hair here/hair there on a piece of trim.

I mostly completed this house 2 years ago. But there are still those little details remaining…the stuff that doesn’t look like much but takes forever (small pieces that have to be custom cut/planed/shaped). It’s time to button things up.

This saw will part of HF’s “Driveway sale” .. According to their ad, the driveway sale items are SUPPOSED to be “in stock items only, no rain checks”, according to the manager of the local HF near me.

I’ve only recently started with stuff from HF and I ran across a coupon for this saw at $119 a couple weeks ago. AT first they wernt going to honor the coupon because itwasnt supposed to be out on the internet yet, but the manager told me that since I had somehow stumbled upon it early he honored the coupon.

So far the only drawback I see with this saw is the dust bag is worthless. The way it’s set up the blade throws the dust straight back and not hardly at all into the bag. In my shop it wont matter much, but today I’m using it in the house cutting laminate flooring I’m installing and the dust is flying everywhere EXCEPT into the bag.

Other than that, the one I got cuts dead-straight right out of the box.

joein10asee: I understand that it cuts straight right out of the box. But have you checked the indexed 45’s for accuracy? Also, whether you found the 45’s to be accurate or not, would you have the ability to fine tune the indexed stops if you found the indexed stops to be inaccurate?

I have an old Craftsman that is easily adjustable except for right around the indexed stops. You can move the table slightly (for example, to 45-1/2 degrees) but, as soon as you tighten it down, it finds and moves to the indexed stop (which is a slot) sure as anything. Very frustrating.

b2rtch: The picture you posted seems to be of the 12” sliding compound saw. It is currently on sale for $169.99.

The 10” sliding compound is on sale for $119.99.

Do you have information that the 12” saw is also going to be offered at the $119.99 price?

I have that coupon. (came from Readers Digest) he had no choice but to honor it otherwise it could be considered bait and switch.
I cut it out for a friend. Does look like a pretty nice saw for the money. I’m sure there are plenty who would disagree with that though.
I’m with Bert,if I was looking I would certainly give it a go.

Mark…I actually havent built anything needing 45s yet, but the night I played with it testing the operations, it seemed to be pretty good on the 45s as well.

The fence is not the most sturdy thing I’ve ever seen and the hold down that clamps the wood to the table is pretty much crap. I modified the hold down that came with my 30 year old Makita chopsaw to fit this and it works much better.

Yeah, yeah I know. You want pictures of what I did to fit the Makita clamp :-)
I’ll take a few and post ‘em here later LOL

@Howie, I was stumbling around their web site looking for coupons that I might use. Only thing I found was a 20% one that I was gonna use. Then I did a Google search for HF Coupons and clicked on a random link. I had to click thru about 6 or 7 different pages and somehow I ended up with a link to the HF Driveway Sale for March. I couldnt re-create that order of links I went thru to get there but the $119 coupon was there.

When I got to HF the clerk at first told me the coupon wasnt good and asked where I got it. I told her “I just printed it off the internet an hour ago.” She says “Hold on a minute, and walks over to the next register and starts talking to some guy (Who I figured out 2 minutes later was the manager). They talk in hushed tones and all the while they’re looking up at me then down at the coupon then back at me again.

He walks over and asks where did I find this coupon? Again I tell him I just printed it off the internet before leaving my house an hour ago. I also mentioned that this was going to be my first ever purchase from HF and it was my first visit to his store. I had printed the coupon in color and he could see it wasnt something I photocopied or photoshopped. He asks me to wait a minute and picks up the phone. I hear him telling someone that “There’s a guy (me) in my store who appears to have gotten a coupon for the March driveway sale, and then he’s asking how could I have gotten it because it was NOT supposed to be out on the ‘net that early.”

He listens for a minute, hangs up and says “Sorry ‘bout that. This ad is not supposed to be out on the internet yet. This is for our MARCH driveway sale, and I was trying to find out how you could have gotten to the ad. Even I havent got a copy of this ad yet. But my boss says that since I can see you didnt photocopy it and it’s in color with all our ad copy including the bar code, we’ll honor it for you.”

I can only guess that the old saying about “Timing being everything” applies here, I musta stumbled upon an “in house” link for HF employees. Because I sure couldnt recreate the link trail I used to get that coupon again when I got back home.

Looks don’t mean a thing and can be very deceiving. This SCMS may look OK but does it perform as after all, it is a HF tool with a cord? The Hitachi SCMS’s are IMO butt ugly but they offer some of the finest miter saws out there. So yes, looks can be deceiving!

The flyer I received today says that the 12” is on sale for 119.99 instead of 199.99 This is a screaming deall.
The flyer is for the next parking lot sale March 8/9/10

” It is currently on sale for $169.99.” on the website but I received a flyer today where it on sale for 119.99
syenefarmer, HF miter saws are very good. I had 2 of them

Even if I do not need it , I really should buy one.

If you watch your Sunday paper coupons and most of the big woodworking magazines, it’s very common to see coupons for the 12” for $120 and the 10” for $80.

I have a 12” dewalt sliding miter saw, it is fairly old and does not have that new fresh look at all. Sort of ugly :) Anyway, when Bert mentioned he broke his harbor frieght saws it made me think of my ugly but dead accurate and dependable old as dirt 12” dewalt slider. I have wanted to replace my Dewalt with a newer looking miter saw but cannot justify it as long as my old ugly is still alive. With that said, I have abused, tried to break and every morning I go to use that thing hoping it has taken it’s last breath, and it continually disappoints me and provides me with a beautiful cut. The miter saw I speak of is our field saw so it gets thrown around, set up, taken down, left outside, rained on, bumped, etc… Just keeps going.

Why do I speak of this little story, because sometimes when you spend a little more money you get a lot better product, even one you could not break even if you tried.

Of course I know the harbor freight saw is 119.00 on sale, and my saw is 599 new. But I actually gave 200 for my Dewalt 12” on CL. So the point, sometimes a good quality but older used tool is better than the flashy new cheapy.

Odiferous, yes but not the brand new model and double compound.

May be you do not try hard enough or you are not good at breaking.
I have over 60 years experience breaking stuff and I am very very good at it.
I take a HF anytime. They Are good saws.
