Hi everyone-

I am wrapping up a diagonal shelving project (lots of sf to cover) and was thinking about spraying the stain on. I have an Earlex 5500 I have not used thus far and was thinking about trying my hand at spraying some Varathane stain on using it. This finish will be dark (not sure which color yet) over Red Oak with a Wipe-On Poly afterwards. Obviously, I am new to spraying and thought this would be a good project to try it out on. Would I need to thin it at all or just pour and spray? Or is this stain not designed for spraying?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I can’t say that I am good at finishing, but in this (your) case I’d spray a mixture of shellac and TransTint (your color choice). Then you can put another coat of shellac or lacquer or poly.

Have your say...
