Topic tags/keywords: question finishing

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever used a wiping varnish over latex paint. I’m building a desk from MDF, and have taken every measure to try and achieve a good finish, but I’m worried that the mineral spirits in the wiping varnish may attack my paint job. I’d like the extra protection and a little bit of sheen provided by an oil based finish. Thanks.

I have had good luck using shellac over latex. Had some book cases that had a blushing problem and shellac fixed it.

Try some shellac on a scrap, if you like the adhesion, then wiping varnish should be OK over the shellac.
