I made a bathroom shelf for my wife out of cherry that she’s been wanting for a while, but I’m wondering what finish would be best? Originally I thought shellac and then I got worried that rubbing alcohol or something might get set on it sometime and ruin the finish. I want something that’s going to bring the grain out while protecting the wood from bathroom type shelf spills. I also have on hand general arm r seal. I like it, but it seems like it takes a week to get the finish done. Any other suggestions or is the general finish the best bet.

I had that same concern with shellac in the bathroom, so I top coated mine with a waterborne finish. The good thing about them is they are generally water clear, so the nice appearance of the shellac on the cherry would be mostly preserved. Waterbornes (I use a Target Coating product) can still be damaged by strong cleaners, but you have a better chance avoiding disaster with the accidental spill.
