I’m headed back to the CFC school in Rockport Maine in a couple of weeks to take one of their workshops. The LieNielsen showroom is down the pike a bit, and it would seem likely I will drop by. I have heard that they offer a discount on showroom purchases plus free shipping. Has anyone been there and/or can confirm or deny that?

I’ve been there but it was a few years ago. Didn’t see anything about discounts or free shipping when I was there but it’s possible.

Have fun and eat a lobster for me. If you have a chance while in Rockport, go down to the harbor and look for a sailing vessel called Heron. See if you can chat with the master, Twig Bower about how he built her. I sailed with him and his wife a little over a year ago and we spent most of the time talking about the construction. Her frames are attached to the keel with tapered, sliding dovetails and the rolling bevels on the planks were cut with a tilting arbor shaper set up so the arbor could be tilted as the plank was fed through.

I’ve been in, but there weren’t any discounts for walk ins. Maybe now. I moved from Maine about 3 years ago. You can usually talk to one of the guys there that will give you a mini crash course on using their products, or sharpening, etc. Great people to deal with. It’s worth the stop.

While you’re there, another place you might like to take a look at is the Liberty Tool Co. in Liberty, located on Rt. 3. About 1/2 hour from Rockport. It is a large building filled to the rafters with old/used tools.

ShopCat,

I am a 9 month student at CFC, so make sure to stop into the 9 month room (Setterlee) and say Hi. LN does a 10% discount at the shop for CFC students, but I’m not sure about shipping. Curiously, I’m headed off to Liberty tool in a few hours, and afterward, on to Captain Tinkham’s (owned by same people).

Okay, I’m fairly new here and not sure how much the locals wander off topic, but since you guys have been or are there, what else would you see? I’m in for the two week fundamentals class and staying in Camden with my wife (who is also in the class but is not a woodworker (we’ve been married 30 years so this form of logic sort of works)).

I would go to Thos. Moser’s store near L.L.Bean to at least fondle the furniture. Then go up to WoodenBoat at Brooklin. Although you might not interested in boats, the woodworking should be of interest. A little closer to Camden, at Duck Trap there’s Duck Trap WoodWorking. Just a little bit up Duck Trap Rd on the left.

I’ve got more but that’ll get you started. Liberty Tool and Capt. Tinkhams are great if you’re looking for used tools.

I get Moser’s catalog. It’s pretty incredible.

Because this site ends up used for history I note:

For students of CFC there is a 10% discount at the Lie-Nielsen showroom in Warren, but it doesn’t apply to everything including shipping.

I made it to Liberty Tool, and ended up picking up a Stanley Sweetheart #4 and a Bailey #5, plus sundry other stuff. Both planes will require lapping and cleaning but the price was good, all the parts are there and working so in about a month they will be back working for a living. Liberty Tool is more a pile of tools, or collection of piles of tools with somewhat ‘casual’ organization than it is a tool ‘store’. Anticipate spending at least an hour looking for anything; it’s probably in there somewhere.

Moser’s stuff is incredible.

Went by Duck Trap, but it was on Sunday and they were closed.
