These beams are for sale on Craigslist and before I make the trip out there to check them out I was wondering if anyone could help ID what species they are. I’d love it if they turned out to be Chestnut… |

It’s absolutely impossible to tell from the pictures, but it’s a safe bet to assume that they are local woods sourced from the surrounding area. A hundred years ago you didn’t ship the timbers for a barn from across the country – you used what was available locally. Go visit the seller and ask him if you can plane a little off of one side of a timber – then you’ll be able to tell. -- Wag more, bark less. |

Well that’s what I was thinking, I was just trying to save hour and a half drive if at all possible. |

It definitely looks like wood, but darned if I could say whether or not its chestnut. ;-) -- Happiness is like wetting your pants...everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.... |
