Does anyone subscribe to finewoodworking.com? I’m considering it, but I’m not sure of the price. I see that there is a 2 week trial membership, but they don’t tell you what the price will be afterwards. Could anyone help me with this? Also, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how beneficial the site is. |

Hey Jo, I believe if you subscribe to the magazine its about $14-$15 per year, I just let mine run out and haven’t gotten a chance to redue it yet. Not too expensive if you consider how much info is on the we site and they add more all the time. -- Jim Hallada, Chesterfield, VA |

It’s $14.95 per year if you subscribe to the magazine already. The website is fabulous. You have access to hundreds of articles and videos. The magazine itself is very well written and worth the price as well. You need to subscribe to the magazine in order to get your customer # to use when you sign up for the website. I highly recommend it. -- NorthWoodsMan |

I subscribe online only and it is the same as a subscription to the magazine. You get to view most of the magazine (without advertising) when the new issues come out. You do not get the special issues, but most of them are just compilations of older articles anyway. I love my subscription and it would take a lot for me to let it go. -- -- Rob Hix, King George, VA |

same here- I subscribe the the online service only, I think it’s about $35 a year which is more then worth it – there are a TON of top-notch quality articles, and videos there, you have access to all the articles that are published in the magazine – with the ability to run a search on specific topics. tool reviews, techniques explanations, and everything else – I highly recommend it. worst case, if you feel you are not getting much from it – you can cancel within the first 2 weeks, and if you’re still hungry for more -you can always cancel after the 1st year… I know I won’t… for such a low price you keep getting articles, and info that is worth so much more. -- My Drinking Club has a Woodworking Problem... |

I like the mag and the website- I think it’s worth it, and consider them both to be my continuing education. -- Ben, Loomis, CA, http://www.covingtonwoodworks.com |

Ditto to everything above. Plus if you ever come across one of FWW’s compilation books and like one or two articles in it, with your subscription you can find just those articles online and not need to get the whole book. Maybe that makes me sound cheap, but I would be lying if I said I hadn’t done it before. -- Check out my blog and podcast "The Renaissance Woodworker" at www.rogersfinewoodworking.com/blog |

well, it looks like I’m gonna be the naysayer here. I subscribed to the magazine and the website, both for about a year. While I think the magazine is probably the highest quality ww’ing rag in print today even fww ends up repeating, and re-repeating, old news. I like that they seem to pick the best of the best to showcase in the feature articles and overall quality of the mag is top shelf. The web site, as others have pointed out, is full of interesting articles, it’s great, lots of info at your fingertips, just a mouse click away. So what’s the downside? Well, it kind of comes down to the same problem all of the trade rags face, just how many ways can you spin an article on cutting dovetails? Or mortise and tenon construction? Or wipe on varnish? Even within one years subscription I felt there was already repetition, and the web site, with the hundreds of articles, same same problem. Just how many interesting ways can you write about fill in the blank here. And then there’s the price, it’s a nice magazine but I’m not sure it’s worth 6 or 7 times the price of Wood Magazine. I think it’s worth it to subscribe to the magazine and website for one year, you get to hold the magazine in your hand and fondle all the great glossies, you get to see some of the best of the best, and you get access to the website so you can download all the interesting articles you find. But after a year you’ll find out you’ve pretty much picked the web site clean and for me I found the articles less and less applicable and less interesting. And just because it costs significantly more than the other rags dont expect the project plans to be any more complete. FWW presents some pretty nice projects but dont expect a full set of plans or cut lists. In fact I think I could point to multiple projects in say Wood Magazine or Popular Woodworking that have more complete project plans than FWW. But hey, it’s only $35 or so for a years subscription, less than the price of a good solid carbide half inch spiral upcut router bit. Might be worth a look. |

coloradoclimber is right about the magazine. I subscribe for a while and found that after a few years, you find similar articles again. |

This is great info. I really appreciate everyone’s input. I’m pretty new to this whole process so reading as much as possible is key. Maybe for my birthday, this is what I’ll ask for. Thanks again! |

I recently subscribed to the online edition and am loving it. I can see where coloradoclimber is coming from…. and I agree this is probably not going to be a lifetime deal. But it is definitely worth your while to spend $35 just to search the archives of articles and projects that interest you. -- Charlie M. "Woodworking - patience = firewood" |
