I have seen a bunch of shop made cigar box instruments and strum boxes on LJ and I would like to make one for my grand daughter for Christmas next year. My problem is I have zero musical back round heck I even have trouble playing the radio. My grand daughter will be almost 4 by December and her Dad has a guitar and plays (sort of) so he could help her.
I have done some google searches and have not found what I am looking for, most of the things I have found assume that the builder at least has a clue and I do not. From looking at the pictures I think I want to make one of the simple strum box instruments where the neck and the sides of the sound box is made from one piece. It also should be sized for a child.
I am up for purchasing a book but I have no idea which one to buy. My shop is well equipped with hand and power tools. I have built quite a few sets of kitchen cabinets and a good bit of furniture and carved a few gunstocks so I am sure I have the skills I just need a plan.
I wanted a guitar when I was growing up I guess to be like the Cool kids that were trying to imitate the Beetles
but my Dad is one of the few people I have ever met who truly does not like music nothing in his religion against it he just plain does not like it. I guess that is why I want to build one for my grand daughter, I could buy one but I want to build one.

I don’t anything about music either and have built several stringed instruments. The above links walk you through building an Andy Mackie.

Thanks I actually stumbled on it myself after a lot of looking.
