I’m looking to make a butcher clock like on thewoodwhisperer.com, but am having a hard time finding hard maple in 8/4, so I was looking at mixing Purpleheart and Yellowheart wood. Would this be ok? I know that the Purpleheart is a good wood to use, but wasn’t sure about the Yellowheart. It sounded like it was in the same family of wood, but I wasn’t sure, just wanted to check. Also can someone recommend different types of wood that would be a good choice for end grain cutting boards? It would be much appreciated, thanks all,
Nick

Anything with a maple like grain should be fine. No oak or anything with a corse grain and big pores.

I’m not up to date on my wood types, are Padauk, Goncalo Alves, Andiroba, Leoporadwood, Bubinga, and Longhi be ok? I know these are the more rare woods, but since I’m already buying some purpleheart from eBay, I also want to try and buy some other woods from his eBay store to save on shipping, and this is what he has. Since I’m doing an end grain board, I’ll be loosing a lot of the look from the woods like the Leoporadwood and the Goncalo Alves(if they will work for this board). But I think they will add a lot to the edge pieces where they do show. Any thoughts?

I shy away from exotics so I can’t help you there. Hard maple is abundant near me and is my primary wood for the blocks I built. I have also used cherry and walnut.

I’m pretty blah in my blocks I guess, but I use them a ton. Butcher whole chickens, prep bbq meats chop veggies.

Well, the bidding is done in about 4 hours, so unless I hear back, I think I’ll go ahead and order some of these pieces and see what I can get. I won’t build any blocks until I find out for sure about the specific woods. Thanks for you help, I wish that Hard Maple was so abundant around me. I’d be a cutting board making machine, lol,
Nick

I use 6/4 and plane it to a target depth of 1 3/8 to make the WW style. You can also do the Wood Magazine design using 4/4. Check out http://lumberjocks.com/projects/9861.

I am currently building a buthcher block island table for my wife.
I am using Purple Heart, Maple, Walnut and Cherry end grain orintation.
David Marks used the same material on his show for a butcher block.
Hope this helps.
