Topic tags/keywords: granite flat

Having seen the new granite fence and tables from Steel City tools… I’m wondering, why have I not seen any “retrofit” fences/tables?

I know the fence on my jointer has a “small” warp. I know the table on my band saw is not flat…. shouldn’t there be an easy way to make a secondary surface to these machines so that at least the working surface can be brought back into true.

Melamine? MDF? Can’t I reasonable achieve flatness considering the relatively small size of a band saw table?

Sorry, I’m an engineer so it’s hard to switch off the need for optimizing my world.

Go to your local granite counter top maker and buy some off cuts. make your own if you want one.

Thanks for your input Marcb.

That is one option. More importantly, I wanted to understand if there were alternatives to going granite that would be more available to everyone.

For example, what if I made a small table out of coated mdf that could sit on top of the current band saw table? Give it 4 hex adjustment screws for each corner for leveling and I should have a relatively flat surface.

Well well well…. curiosity can’t be that bad.

I stopped by a granite slab yard and guess what i found? A 1.5”x4”x72” backsplash for ….. $10. It was a broken piece of a longer stock.

A 6” piece would have been ideal but I didn’t have much time to roam the yard.

Told ya ;)

Off cuts are cheap because they can’t really be used for anything.

Hard to work, so do your research. but I’ve talked to guys who’ve used this stuff in building home made stuff. Just epoxy in machine screw threads for fastening.
