Topic tags/keywords: planer snipe dewalt 733

Hi, everybody. I recently bought my very first planer: a second hand Dewalt 733. I understand that snipe is typical for planers on the last 2” or so, but I think this planer has a particular issue that I can’t seem to find any mention of in any of the woodworking forums.
The powered outfeed roller that is supposed to pull the wood through the blade once it clears the powered infeed roller doesn’t actually touch the newly planed wood. When I put a straight-edge on the planer bed, the infeed roller is lower than the outfeed roller; that doesn’t make any sense, right? The outfeed one should be lower because the wood that it touches is shorter than the wood that the infeed roller touches. So, I was wondering if anyone has ever run into this kind of thing, or if there is some way to adjust the height of that rear (and currently useless) roller?

I have a 733, but I don’t understand what your problem is, are you concerned about the snip or is the wood not being pulled through the planer?

Your planer’s blades may be set so they protrude too far out of the
cutterhead. Check this with the jigs that came with the planer. If the
knives are taking off too much material your rear roller won’t contact the
wood coming out.

Hi Loren,
Thanks for the tip. I’ll try to realign them tonight to figure out if that was the problem. Despite the fact that the knives might be set up incorrectly, it still doesn’t make sense that the rear roller would be higher (i.e. further from the planer bed) than the front rollers, does it?
Thanks again.

I owned a 733 for a while. It’s a good tool. The sintered gears
that drive the feed rollers can break on you. I don’t think the height
of the rollers is adjustable but I could be wrong – all I know for sure
is I never had to do it.

The height of the infeed and outfeed tables however is adustable
and there may be a way to adjust the platten as well. The planer isn’t
very complicated to work on.

I realigned the blades like Loren suggested, and tried to adjust infeed/outfeed tables as best I could. I’ve now gotten the planer to completely pass the wood through the blades and out the back without much snipe. This happens on the right side, at least; for some reason it doesn’t completely pass through when I feed the 2×4 board through the left side. But, either way, still much better than it was when I picked it up!
