I am trying to build raised wood panel frames. I have very little experience with a router. I settled on a Freud 99-571 raised panel bit. I managed to find a rail and stile bit set, also by Freud. The model is 99-263. Does anyone know if these two bits are intended to work together? I gather the combination of 99-260 or 99-261 and the 99-571 would work fine together, just not sure about what I bought. There are some in my woodworking group who feel they may not mate well together.

You bought a nice set of router bits that are made for 3/4 stock and are compatible. I have the raised panel bit and really like the underside cutter. It’s a bit fussy to setup so I suggest test cuts, on scraps of the same thickness as your finals.

Almost any raised panel bit can be used with any rail/stile set. The profiles should be matched but Hey, it’s a matter of taste. I use the combination you bought all the time and think they look quite nice together.

I want to thank the three of you for your replies. It is reassuring to see there are others who have used this bit combination successfully. Thank you David for the link to the Freud bit collection. Since you all have experience with raised panels, I have another question. Do you think an exposed section of 7 1/2 inches wide on a panel is large enough to use the 99-571. By my calculations that would leave me with a raised surface of of 4 1/2 inches on an overall field of a 12 inch width, including stiles. Are those proportions reasonable or is this more a matter of personal taste?

Have your say...
