Hello all, thanks for your help in advance!

I finally was able to buy a planer over Christmas. I love it so far, but soon realized what I already had thought which was that a planer isn’t much good without a jointer! I had been flirting with buying a decent bench top jointer for budget and space reasons.

So my search began on craigslist. I just found a Delta x5 6inch jointer for $325. This is at the top end of what I had saved up. It is in pristine condition, it was just used for one cabinet job 5 years ago and the owner had kept it waxed but not used it.

Is this a good deal? Will I be happy with this jointer for some time? I am just a weekend warrior so it won’t get tons of use.

IF down the road I wanted to upgrade to the helical head is this something I could do on this model?

Thanks!

That sounds like a decent deal to me. It’s 200$ less (if you factor shipping) than the cheapest grizzly. You can get a shelix head for just about any jointer. If they don’t have something specific listed, call them and they can make one.

That’s a fine deal. See if you can negotiate it down, but I wouldn’t feel bad about paying $325. That should be the only jointer you need…until you need an 8 inch jointer.

You will be suprised how often you use the jointer. You will be happy you spent the money.

Brandon,
I have been looking for a longer bed jointer, so I have been watching for good deals and checking on the Delta status. From what I see around here the previous model Delta (before the x5 can’t remember the model #) seem to be going for 225 to 250. The x5’s I have never seen come available, but I can’t believe 325 isn’t reasonable.

As far as the helical cutter being available, I have some serious doubts. I have serious doubts about Delta as a whole. The replacement blades are only available from an after-market company, so you can see this is some cause for concern.
