To be honest, I’m not even sure if it’s two people, or just one and a sockpuppet (they both have the same bad grammar and spelling), but every thread I want to read gets overrun by Jorge and Dude. I’ve seen warnings posted, I flag the offending posts, but nothing comes of it. Not only is it irritating but puts me in a bad mood which is the opposite reason I visit here.

One sure way to solve this problem is to not commet on those off topic post..i don,t even open those…this is not the place for such discussion as politics, religion , an such…just pass them by… just my 2 cents..

start narrowing a list of contacts, people that you know you are going to learn something from ….....In this site like the highway, you’ll see a crowd of uncivilizated jerks cutting off other people’s way!

You are so right Rick. That thread about alternative technologies to SS is great. I enjoy reading the clever and diverse ideas that people can come up with. Then it gets overrun with the all too common bickering.

It’s like going to see a baseball game on a fine summer day, but the game is constantly interrupted by arguments about whether the designated hitter is a good idea.

I agree Rick. There is also a little responsibly on the thread owner. I blocked thedude once, he knows if the crap starts on any of my threads he’s gone. He’s the only LJ I’ve ever blocked, but I don’t participate in LJs for arguments.

the off topics don’t bother me. I can just skip them if I choose.

After spending years on forums where this happens, i’ve learned to click out when I see this happening. One of the best ways to avoid it is to stay off the off topic posts.
This is a great site and I consider all of you brothers and sisters and I’d hate to see anyone leave over a few bad woodworkers.

The best way to settle it?
I was in a meeting. 2 young engineers going at it back and forth. Couldn’t agree on the time of day. The old school plant manager speaks up and says “I’m going to take a smoke. While I’m gone I want you 2 to pull them out and see who’s is the biggest so we can move on when I get back”.
It worked for him.

Can’t argue with your observation, Rick. :-) The old Python skit had a specific office set aside for arguments; maybe LJs needs one of those. Or, listen to the little voice inside that says walk away. Hard to do after awhile, though.

it seems like there are some on here to stir up a bunch of mess all the time.i enjoy some of the off topic’s but if they are getting into arguments and acting like 2 year olds i don’t have the time or patience for it.

this is a awesome site to learn on and to see a bunch of very talented people showcase there projects.

Until you brought attention to it, Rick, I was unaware of the situation.
That could mean a couple things. I’m obtuse (probably) and, somehow the sorts of posts you reference don’t catch my eye. Even if they did register in my brain, I’d probably ignore them, anyway.
Won’t mention any names but, having read just a few posts by some, it’s easy to simply pass by all future posts by them. Not only is “bickering” and “baiting” child like and inane, but wholly uninteresting. Not worth my time.

I almost never click on off topic posts. I get upset over stupidity so I avoid it in this way.

I am guilty of getting sucked in. This is a good call to not get sucked it. Between the lines there are some fun ideas being batted around, in the SS alternatives thread, and I was having fun, just for fun. I thought. I apologize too, I Think I contributed to the pollution by letting my self get distracted by it.

I believe the thread Rick is referring to is in the power tool section; not the off-topic section.

I have the same frustration. I sent a message to a long time contributor asking if moderators ever step in to re-align the members. He informed me about the blocking function but blocking can only be initiated by the thread originator. I started a message to the originator to ask him to block the culprits but I didn’t send it because I thought he may enjoy the bickering.

In my opinion there are more people involved than just the two he mentioned. I’ve coined the group the “Sawstop Death Eaters”. This small group chimes in on every thread related to Sawstop and they say exactly the same thing every time. There’s rarely anything informative in their post.

I started a “SS legislation” thread to try to bait the Death Eaters into seeing how repetitive and silly their posts have become. The “Death Eaters” showed up and performed just as planned. I was hoping that would a) see the pattern and stop, b) refrain from polluting other threads and just focus on the legislation thread or c) get tired of repeating themselves altogether. It didn’t work very well, did it?

I think this website is the best built website on the internet. It is so easy to find information and to post pictures/videos. But the childish behavior is dragging me down. I understand I have alternatives but the solution to this problem appears to be very easy to implement from my perspective.

I do agree with Rick, but what really can be done? One of the better features of the site (IMO) is that they let the members have a lot of freedom and leeway in terms of content. I wish some people could handle it better, and that some people would just go away, but the world takes all types, so they tell me. Unfortunately, it is not confined to the off topic stuff. A couple of good threads have been muddied, and I am not sure the OP is always around, attentive, or interested in moderating. Still a great site, with lots of info and some genuine people prepared to help.

This sort of goes back to something I brought up in another thread. It would be great to have a “hide” feature where you could put someone on your “hide” list and you would not see any of their posts. Unlike the “block” feature, you wouldn’t be affecting their ability to post, you would just be saving yourself from from even seeing what they posted.
