Here is a question I hope you can shed some light on. I am building a rocking chair for a very good friend that is about to “Hatch”. As a baby gift I thought this would be very useful. It is out of Sapele and is a very beutiful wood.
I am trying to figgure how to finish it. I want it to be durable because it will get a lot of use and will likely get covered with all kinds od liquids (baby foods, milk, formula, baby squeezins, alcohol, etc). BLO turned it way too dark. Lacquer looks very good. I didn’t have any varnish left to try. Poly is out, too hard to repair if needed.

Any help would be appreciated.

-- I have never been lost, but I have been a tad confused for a few days.

One suggestion I would have is shellac. Shellac is a hard finish that protects the wood and it is very easy to repair.

This weekend David Marks had an episode on finishing which was very instructional. Lacquer and shellac form a hard “shell” around the wood, which varnish and poly get absorbed by the wood. Check it out at diyNetwork.

i would go with a laquer or shellac. also look into water based finishes. like general finishes polyacrylic. very good finishes. you should check out general finishes line of industrial products to get some ideas.

I do a lot of work with Sapele and finish mostly with tung oils danish oil waterbased varnish or oil based varnish so any of those bearing in mind it’s for a small child I would think hard about what I put on it.Alistair
