Topic tags/keywords: lumber turning bowl blank

I’ve sat and watched while a lot of my fellow LJ’s find amazing lumber for next to nothing.

This past weekend it was my turn. A somewhat local wood dealer was going out of business and was selling all his remaining turning stock for .25 to 1.00 a pound. I went with my wife (she’s the one who found out that he was doing this), we picked up quite a few items:

Bowl Blanks:
Sweet Gum
Red Ash
Hackberry
Camphor
Spalted Maple
Distressed Elm
Elm Burl

Forgot one: Black Cherry

+ two boxes of pen blanks. All told the haul was over 120 pounds of turning materials. I have not turned any of these types of wood before (except the maple). Looking forward to the experience and outcome (good or bad).

Wow, that is a great haul, and an amazing deal! It’s my turn for an amazing deal. I’ve never bought wood by the pound before.

Just a reminder for everyone – when working with spalted maple, you need to be very careful about the dust, which can cause a terrible respiratory infection if inhaled. Use the best dust collection method you have, and wear a dust mask or (preferrably) respirator.
