Thanks to all who wrote to express their concern. My internet access is limited, but I just wanted to let everyone know my family and I are fine. We evacuated to a beautiful golf course condo in West Point, MS and are just waiting for the okay to return home. As far as I can tell from reports and a brief conversation with a neighbor, my home escaped any major damage, other than a loss of power and what will now be a refrigerator full of spoiled food. I’ll check back in a few days when I get back home and settles in. -- Charlie M. "Woodworking - patience = firewood" |

Just an update…. I’m home safe and sound, and other than a huge mess as far as the yard and pool are concerned, we sustained no damage. Of course I wasn’t too happy about throwing out all the food in my refrigerator and freezer since power was out for 2 1/2 days. But, all things considered, we were extremely lucky. Again, thanks to all for the prayers and concern. And regarding Bob #2’s comment about “moving out of the trouble zone”... Which planet did you have in mind, Bob? <g> -- Charlie M. Hey Charlie, I’m an insurance agent in washington state and i make sure to build in coverage for spoild food from power outages. I’d check your homeowners insurance because food spoilage coverage is a fairly common coverage which will give you 200-1000 for lost food! If you don’t have that coverage call your agent because it’s VERy inexpensive just a few bucks a year. Good luck hope this helps. -- Great Coffee= 8oz strong coffee, 1tbsp brown sugar, 1tbsp 1/2&1/2, 1 heaping teaspoon mahoganny |

Brad, thanks for the tip. I know my insurance covers food spoilage because we collected for it after Katrina. But I’m pretty sure my deductible still applies, and down here they have a special higher deductible that applied to anything hurricane-related. I’ll check it out, though. Thanks, Guys! -- Charlie M. Ummm…Ike is coming and you guys are in the way again! But I’m glad you all faired well and damage was at a minimum for you. Was watching the last storm pound New Orleans’ “new” levee walls on CNN, and I got to tell ya, they need to go a couple feet higher dude. That last storm was only a grade 2…Katrina was grade 5+ and Ike is already building into a major blow. Best of luck to ya and if ya need a woodshop to hide out in for a week give me a call. We’d welcome ya. -- Bob Vila would be so proud of you! |

Dadoo, thanks for the offer. Hopefully, I won’t have to go thatfar north to get out of Ike’s way. :-) That video you are talking about was pretty scary, but overtopping there would have only flooded the lower 9th ward again… not the whole city. They are in the process of building floodgates that would keep storm water from ever entering that particular waterway, but completion is still a couple of years out. -- Charlie M. Hi Charlie, Actually you shouldn’t have a deductible for your freezer contents. your deductible should only apply to a structural loss or damage. This is sweet I’m technically “working” while i’m writing this and I’m also on a woodworking site….. sweet. To bad I can’t write insurance from my workbench. -- Great Coffee= 8oz strong coffee, 1tbsp brown sugar, 1tbsp 1/2&1/2, 1 heaping teaspoon mahoganny |
