Topic tags/keywords: hand planes craigslist question

So, I found 2 hand planes on Craigslist yesterday for 45 bucks. Both are craftsman and in great shape, one is an 18” corrugated jointer and the other is a 14” smoother. Upon arriving at the gentleman’s house he had an entire table full of planes for sale… So in addition to the previously mentioned planes I also picked up a Stanley 220 as well as a Stanley 102. So for the beginner woodworker… is this a score or strikeout?

Pretty good deal.

That Craftsman joiner was probably made by Stanley. Pics would help. If you take the plane apart and look on the underside of the frog, you might find “Stanley” engraved.

That is the way an old Craftsman joiner I had was.

BTW: I sold my 18” Craftsman Joiner (Smooth sole) plane on ebay, about a year ago. It sold for $45 plus shipping. So, if the planes are in good shape, you got a good deal.

I’d say its a pretty good deal. You saved enough money to finance a nice sharpening setup! I’d rather have a Craftsman plane with an incredibly sharp blade than a Lie Nielsen with a dull one. Nice score!
