I posted earlier about buying a small band saw for projects as I advance in woodworking. With my budget I have been looking at the craftsman 24100, the 10 inch model. This would also work well with my current space situation. Looking online I found a guy selling a Delta 28-303. While the price is a little out of my cash range I have some things he would be interested in trading so it may be possible. My main question is, Is this a good saw and what would be a good price? It is a variable speed that is listed I believe as a metal/wood saw.

Hi -

I’m not familiar with the saw so I did a Google search to learn more. This appears to be a meta/wood bandsaw. If that is the case, these saws have a set of gears: slower for metal, faster for wood. Not sure what your application is but if you are only doing woodworking, then you will be paying for something that you may never use. You may also be buying more complexity than you need, too.

If you are going to get a bandsaw, a 14” is a pretty good compromise – that means you can run a 14” wide board through the saw. You would be surprised but sometimes 14”s is a tight squeeze. While you are looking, you may want to also consider saws that support riser blocks. A riser block elongates the neck of the saw allowing you to re-saw thicker stock. Two other thngs to think about. The more HP the better – 3/4HP would be the minimum I would accept (but that’s me). The other thing you should look at are the blade guides. Easily adjusted earing guides are preferable to bolcks (my opinion of course).

I’m sure others will share their thoughts as well.

Delta 28-303 is nice band saw . 14” has pretty enough power and resaw capacity. Ideally, it is good for small shops. With the price, I think it would start from $200- $1000.
