I see posts all the time on LJ’s about where to get good hardwoods, and people are always referred to woodfinder.com. I found that woodfinder gave me bad results with the closest yard being over 50 miles away. I know for a fact that there is a small hardwood dealer 6 miles from my home and another larger one around 25. I also tried it from NYC and it didn’t suggest one of the biggest yards I have ever been too 20 miles away. Some of the yards that it misses are unbelievable and have beautiful stuff. I dont know if this is unique to me but I propose LJ’s should have a section for each state, and the members of LJ’s will post what they know.

Just a thought. What do you think?

Cole, I just tested woodfinder from my location and it only selected one of the three suppliers close to me in my area, I’m guessing it’s a database that’s not kept up to date.

I wonder if woodfinder only shows its supplier members?

What Don said or perhaps it’s up to us to inform them? I just sent an email to woodfinder suggesting the two suppliers not mentioned with website and address details.

I agree with Don, there is probably a charge to be listed since it is a form of advertising.

Cole,

I like the idea, but I’d suggest expanding it a bit.

It ain’t easy to find suppliers that offer good bang-for-the-buck, but we all need them. And I’m a big believer in the recommendation of actual customers (and a complete cynic of ALL advertising claims, including those that pass as “product reviews” in the mags). And I especially appreciate the few opportunities I’ve found to deal with other LJs members.

We have the Trade & Swap forum, but . . .

I would like the Reviews section to be more of a “Reviews and Recommendations”. Wood could be a sub-section. To have value, we’d really need an “average rating” and “search by geography” capability – of products, suppliers, etc.

I’m afraid that what I want is easier said than done. But I do think its a good idea.

If there was a way to document it, it could be as simple as using the tags. Example, anyone postin a review on a lumber yard tag it with lumber yard recommendation.

Not sure how to document it though.

Edit: and of course make it searchable.
