Topic tags/keywords: resource question

I’m looking to get several small pieces of book matched live-edge boards to use in small scale nakashima builds. Can anyone recommend a supplier in the So Cal region?

How small, how thick, how wide, how much?

I want to develop my skill before progressing to larger builds so the pieces will go towards making serving trays and small displays.

The dimensions can vary but as long as they are close to the listed ranges I don’t see a problem.

Width: 4-5” (The book matched pieces will be planed and fitted together yielding boards 8-10” wide max)
Thickness: 1-1.25”
Length: 10-14”

Depending on the cost I would like to get enough for several builds. 4-5 boards so ~ 8-10 pieces.

Gotcha!

Does it matter if it’s hardwood or softwood? or maybe both?

I would prefer hardwood but I wouldn’t want to limit myself to any pieces with great potential :). If you think you may have a few I would love to see some pictures :)

I’ll go out to the shop sometime today and see what I’ve got.

Check Bohnhoff lumber. I have seen slabs and shorts there in the
corner of the warehouse.

I found that I have some oak, straight grained, red and white, 4/4, about 10-12” long.
Some Bodark, (Osage Orange), that has lots of problems, up to about 3” thick and 12” long.
Texas Dark Cedar, 12” wide or up to 16” wide, if it works right and as long as 48”. If you only want 1 1/4” thick it’s no problem.
Wild Cherry, about 12” long, maybe a little shorter, probably about 6” wide, it’s buggy but was put in the oven for about 8 hours at 150°… ain’t no critters gonna survive ther.

Would any of that work for you?

You pay shipping.

It all sounds great! any idea on what the shipping would cost for all of it? Btw any chance I could see a picture or 2 of the boards?

I’ll have to stick a bunch of it in a box and see what it holds.

Pictures aren’t a problem, I just need to remember to take the camera to the shop without the wife seeing me do it.
