Topic tags/keywords: question veneering milling walnut

In looking at all the great serving trays recently, I was wondering how many people use veneer for the bottoms? Since I am limited in my ability to produce or get quality 1/2 or 1/4” hardwood for this purpose, I started thinking about veneering 1/4” plywood. What are some of your experienced ways of coming up with the beautiful boards I see in the bottoms of these trays? Thanks everyone.

I make tray bottoms out of either 1/4” MDF or 1/4” plywood, then veneer both sides.
In my case I use marquetry on the tops but that’s not necessary.
Veneer allows you to do things that are hard to do with solids and the stable substrates eliminate lots of expansion / shrinkage problems.

Shipwright, do you have a veneer source that you like?

As Paul points out, veneer both sides, otherwise you run a very good chance of the panel bowing or cupping.

I buy veneer from various places, mostly online. Do a search for wood veneer suppliers and if you’re lucky there will be one near enough to visit. If not, most are very good with mail order.
