I use the common Pony pipe clamp for 3/4” pipe frequently. It slips quite often using galvanized pipe. I know you are supposed to use black iron, but it is almost impossible to find where I live. Does anyone have a solution for stopping the slipping?

You could try this- if the clamps have been used for a while, the “biting” edges of the slider could be worn. Pop out the retainer spring and flip over the silver rings and reinsert them and the retainer. This will put a “sharper” edge against the pipe and maybe hold better.

try ruffing up the surface of the pipe with sandpaper.

Not sure if this would work, but you could try wrapping the pipe in duct tape, but that might make the pipe too thick. Heck it might not even hold any better. But you know, it’s duct tape.

I would watch buffing up the surface of the pipe if I were you. Your going to put a lot of zinc dust up in the air & that’s nasty stuff to get in the lungs. You’ll suffer a lot later on in the day. you’ll get the hack, bad stuff on the lungs.

My pipe clamps are on gal pipe and like yours they do sllip. I just put a little finger pressure on the lever until it bites.

Thanks for your replys. the three things I will try: Sand off the zinc coating. (using a respirator and long sleeve shirt) Put pressure on the rings as I am applying pressure. The problem here is not having enough hands to accomplish the task. Take the retaining spring out, and turn the rings over to have a fresh and, presumably, sharp face to grip the pipe.

You could try removing the galvanizing. I think vinegar does it. I do it with screws when I want to make them look old, and I have to soak them. You could keep the pipe wet with vinegar, or soak if possible. Probably easier , and healthier, than sanding. If not vinegar, some other acid might do it faster.

A simple little tap with a hammer will set the clamp. Works for me anyway.
