So I have taken on the project of building a coffee table for my mom. (see pics below) She wanted a nice dark wood, so I picked up some 4/4 walnut for the top. I will be loosely connecting the boards together (she wants a rustic look). So today I laid the boards across the base in the living room, and it turns out that she likes the color as it is, and only wants it to be a little darker. She also doesn’t want the grain to pop out so much. Any ideas on a finish for it? I’m looking for a pretty simple finish that i can just get at Home Depot.

Cool story about the base: I was planning on building one, but i was walking through Brooklyn and I saw in an open warehouse, a wooden box on some legs. So I cautiously walk in (wasn’t the best neighborhood), to see what it was destined for, and it turns out it was ready to be trashed. Then come to find out, it came out of a sweat shop in Manhattan from the 1890’s!!! The guy gave it to me for free! (that was fun to lug home on the subway)

Thanks in advance for ideas on a finish!
