Topic tags/keywords: lumberjocks site suggestions must read

So, I was looking at some other forums, and I thought we could have something like…
  • Quote feature, I’ve seen some people trying to reply to a phrase people have sent…. So basically, you could have a “Quote” button and if someone presses it, then it would automatically post it on a reply section or something, you know… We could limit it to making a spoiler after a certain amount of quotes have been done, like you know, to prevent GIANT quote pyramids.
  • Spoilers So, basically what this would do, is hide a bunch of text that you selected. It would be like a “Click here to look” button where you press and the text would be shown.
  • Thanks Now, this may look like a bit of the other forums, but instead of people having to support, by doing +1, We could have a thank button on each post, where people would thank to agree on it or thank the post because it was helpful.

So, I would love to see of your opinions. If you are against this idea, its okay, just post your comments. ALL COMMENTS ARE WELCOME.
Thanks for reading

Alex

Yes, a quote feature would be nice.

I agree with the thanks button or you could also call it a “like” button (as in FaceBook) to show that you agree or like what the person has posted. The like button must function on the comments also. The like on the original project/blog post can even be added to the stats (views, times favoured etc) at the top.

thanks for your feedback.

The idea of “like” has been discussed before and the thoughts behind not adding it are that posting something is more “community building”, more interactive than a “click of a button”. But we will re-consider the possibility. Thanks.

I am in other forums with that feature. While it is convenient, it tends to make a mess because people are lazy and don’t edit the quoted text down to a reasonable length.

I think I like the way it is now. We get more interaction. Just my opinion

here’s an idea:

Share – button that would share a post with Refurbers or Garden tenders.

I’ll bet there are tons of projects that fit both sites, like a garden trellis, flower box or a kitchen remodel with extensive woodworking.

If the comments were shared on both sites, the membership numbers and activity on the smaller sites would improve tenfold, I’ll bet. Is this even possible? Yes, I know I can copy and paste – done that.

Refurbers needs help because everyone wants to be here where the action is. Why not invite everyone to the party?

As a carpenter/ woodworker, half my stuff should be on Refurbers (and it is) but to be honest, I just don’t have enough time to keep up with two sites that are so close in resemblance. But, I feel guilty that I’m not supporting Refurbers.

I want to start a profile with Garden tenders too. A share button would be very cool to post my yard art at multiple sites….. You should see my gardens!

Still the best site out there. Thank you Debbie!

No Quote feature, please. What we have is far more readable than the usual forum quote mess. It becomes too hard to find the “new content” amidst all those quotes. And I contend that its easier AND more intelligible here.

No Spoilers feature, thanks anyway. Posters can make a parenthetical link reference to an expansion of their thoughts. Interested parties can follow. Here, we should encourage brevity. I’d just rather see scarce programming resources allocated to other priorities.

YES (Pretty Please) to Like (or other) voting mechanism. The Like mechanism would make intelligence out of all the data. This is a huge “value add”. Not just for individual replies, but also for Reviews and Projects and Blogs. This would make finding the best LJ content so much easier. And remember to show it prominently and make it easy to search. PLEASE!!!

I like the quote feature, as long as you can snip some of the text. Many posts that you would want to quote have several points in them that may not be pertinent to what you want to reply. Besides that, often here somone will reply to a post within a thread and it’s very hard to keep track of which post the new one is addressing.

I agree, general quoting becomes too messy and it is difficult to find the new information. Besides, if one really needs to, or wants to, quote a specific part of another message, it can be done.

You can already quote someone. I did it in the first reply.

You just need to know a little html. Copy and paste the lines you want to quote between blockquote tags. You do it like this…

<blockquote>
John Doe said…
“blah blah blah blah”
</blockquote>

I just use windows copy/paste functions to quote. No problem at all. And I can just select the part I want.

BUT, being able to search a specific thread for a particular comment or reference; now that would be nice. Even to be able to “GOTO” a particular post number would offer a way to attempt to wade through huge threads and/or refer back to particular points of interest.

A searchable/sortable user list would be awesome.

I find it frustrating on other sites to have to sort through long lines of quotes to get to the actual message. Half the time the quote is longer than the actual post…
The “like” or “thanks” button would certainly be convenient, but would really depersonalize the feedback…
I think LJ’s currently has the best forum format of the many other WW sites on the web.
