Hi, I am new to this site and hope you don’t mind what is probably a dumb question. My dilemma: I have completed building a blanket chest made of makore and brazilian cherry. I am already late on my deadline; the customer who will purchase it wanted it several weeks ago! Anyway, after the usual prep of the wood which included using an aniline dye, I decided to use Waterlox Sealer/Finish on it. I have used it before with good results. This time, though, I really don’t like the result. The wood appears rather dull and flat. I wanted it to have a little more warmth and “depth”. My question: can this be fixed? Can I use dewaxed shellac over the waterlox? Any advice would be appreciated!

try a paste wax like briwax or minwax. you’ll get a little more sheen. briwax comes in colered versions too and you can get it at woodcraft. check out my walnut and maple tray. it has a coat of wax on it.

Yes, you can use shellac over the waterlox, which is essentially a diluted tung oil. Shellac is compatible with all finishes on the market.

is the finish smooth feeling? Perhaps you can buff it?
