I read an article this morning that tried to summarize why so many buyers abandon their purchases on line.

Reasons shoppers abandon their carts

— 56% said shipping charges were too expensive
— 41% said the item was unavailable
— 29% said the site was too difficult to navigate
— 21% said the order wouldn’t go through
— 18% said the order form was too complicated
— 15% said they were unable to use coupons or discounts on the site.
(180%) ? my, my ,my , <vbg>

It kind of struck me as funny when I tried to add up the percentages for failed sales.

I figure it must have been surveryed by the same geeks that built the annoying shopping baskets and monitored the inventories and padded the shipping charges.

Incidently, I fall into all of those categories from time to time.

It’s a real pain to realize the $12 order is going to cost $14 to ship.

I recently abandoned a cart because the final price wasn’t the final price. After 30 days, they charged you again as long as you were satisfied. That seemed like it might just go on in Compuserve fashion. I’m not sure if anyone remembers those old days when they kept billing you months after you canceled your contract. Anyhow…

Shipping seems to me to be the taxes of online purchases…

Still, you can get some great deals every once in a while.

I abandoned about six carts yesterday looking for the bottom line cost of a dado blade. You have to go to the submit order page to see what the bottom line is.

I’m sure the whacked-out percentages is because the survey was “check all that apply” and not “check only one.”

I would have to agree with Eric on the percentages and I too fall into all of them at one time or another. Yesterday I dumped a cart because I was buy a matress for our daughter and relized the shipping on a $100 Serta matress was going to cost $65. Seemed a little out of line to me too!

Why do companies insist on padding shipping charges? They aren’t fooling anyone. It would not be rocket science to design a shopping cart that tracks shipping weights, and calculates actual shipping by destination zip code. I realize mail order businesses have to pay people to fill orders, but those costs should be built into their prices.

I left a buggy (“on the ground shopping” yesterday because the store was agian, unable to supply me with all the parts for my down spouts for my gutters.

Taking a load of stuff home that you can’t use is a crap shoot.
Chances are the next store you try to get the remaining parts from sells a different brand.
You can’t ask about pending delivery of stock nor can you depend on the supplier to replenish his shelves an a reasonable time.
I wonder how much longer retailers can sell at this level before it severely impacts the bottom line.

I understand that abandoned shopping carts at retail stores is now up 47% over last year.

I guess I’m part of that statistic too.

It is usually shipping charges that makes me leave the cart behind.

But like someone said. you can usually find a good deal if you look for it.

Right, snowdog and others who mentioned shipping!
If you get your purchase, and are unhappy with it, they’ll refund your PURCHASE PRICE but not the shipping…So they charge a low price for their merchandise, then make a few bucks off you by inflating the shipping charge, and end up dollars ahead on your order whether you keep the item or not. Many Ebay sellers operate this way, and I’ll simply pass on them unless it’s something I really gotta have.

Charlie – you mean that it doesn’t really cost $75 to ship 10 8×10 sand papers? holy crap…

I’ve loaded up a cart, only to see the total say “HOW MUCH IS THAT GOING TO COST!” I then realize I don’t really need the stuff.

Then, I leave…

Mot are you sure that you wern’t leasing the item and not buying it. So you had a lease cost each month.

Next will be a ‘virtual ’ restocking charge

Just for grins, next time you order something, check Thailand as the destination, takes the joy right out of any new toy and it becomes really easy to justify not ordering something.

Mostly seeing the bottom line makes me painfully aware that my desires outweigh my budget. I do appreciate business that will allow me to transfer these items to a wish list. That just seems like good business, and a courtesy.

Padding the shipping does seem egregious. As Charlie noted, companies that sell from a walk-in retail basis inflate the price of the item to cover transportation, pick & pull, restocking and pilferage expenses. So if the e-business sales price advantage goes in the toilet with the padded shipping fee, I’ll be joining Bob, sauntering quietly down the virtual aisle, and back out the door to the information superhighway.

I abandon stuff all the time, some of it is shipping some of it is I walk away and forget about it (Its my splurge spending test)

Some times I’m just pricing out a project (mcmaster).

I try to clear them when I think about it, but sometimes I go back to a site and find it waiting for me.

For me, it’s what a lot of people here say. The cost of shipping is the PITS!! I would look at the item & say no way that thing is going to cost that much to ship, so I don’t get it! I’ll try to find it locallity if I can, & if I can’t I try to make do or improvise it.

I try to always wait until the site is offering free shipping. If not, I usually can find it locally for near the same price and I get instant gratification.
