Topic tags/keywords: question lathe finishing I have made several dozen pens now, and about 18 wine bottle stoppers. So far, I have used Shellawax only, except 1 purpleheart pen where I tried spray on lacquer. My question is, what other finishes should I be trying? I see ads for HUT wax, and I see a lot about CA finishing, but that seems like a lo more work, is it really better? Just looking for some feedback from some of you more experienced turners out there. Thanks! -- Tim, Myrtle Beach, DrTim@ONeillChiro.com- Just one more tool, that's all I need! :) |

I only use CA finish on my pens. The CA will outlast any other finish that I’ve seen for something that gets the kind of daily wear and tear a pen gets. It is a lot more work to get it ‘right’, but in the end absolutely worth it. On my bottle stoppers I use tung oil and paste wax. -- John |

Tim, I’ve tried several other friction waxes , but like the Shellawax the best. I use CA as well, mainly to prevent the finish wearing off. -- Roger |

MickeyD and I use Mylands, Hut Crystal Coat and PSI Lacquer Friction polish for the most part but use a varity of other finishes and waxes when we have the time… -- Never board, always knotty, lots of growth rings |

Hi tim. Try using EEE polish just before the Shellawax.I find that the combination makes wood look like glass! -- Jim Jakosh.....Practical Wood Products...........Learn something new every day!! |

I stopped using hut wax sticks did not see any improvement to finished pen. CA is a simple and easy finish to apply. Have never had any problems applying a CA finish. Surprised so many folks do have problems with it. Check out “finishing thread,” over at IAP. Not sure CA, is anymore durable than any other finishing material. http://www.penturners.org/forum/ I have used friction finishes Crystal Coat, and film building finishes Shellac, Wipe on Poly, and Lacquer. I stopped using CA, as a finish after becoming sensitized to the stuff. Would like to try General Finishes “waterborne Turners finish or other waterborne products. Selecting a finishes for wood you turn and whether want more natural look and feel, or sheen becomes easy over time. -- Bill |
