My father in law was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. He had some surgeries and now is clear of any cancer. It was and is an ordeal though.

In the process of his illness, he gave me some old planes that his father and grandfather used. They were in pretty bad shape and won’t ever plane again, at least not by me. So I thought I’d recondition them and give them back in a nice new cherry shelf.

The shelf is done except to seal. I used Danish oil cherry on it. After a couple days the blotch should come out. Then I will seal it with minwax poly gloss wipe on.

The planes are nothing special just some old Penn hardware store or blacksmith shop.

These are the planes.

Thanks b2rtch. As all projects, this was a learning experience. The middle shelf should not have been routed, the boards on the back should match or at least have the grain going in the same direction. Little stuff like that still get me. I should have gone with the walnut dowels too.

May be but your heart is at the right place and this is what matters and this what your father in law will see.

I think it looks terrific. Give it some good sunlight to make the red come out. I have some old planes that have probably seen their last woodworking days and I might have to borrow your idea. Great job and for a great “cause”

Congrats.
