I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and so I’m puzzled by your question. By “mask” do you mean to cover it up, or protect it from other finishes. Also, do you mean alcohol based dye by chance?

I am talking about blocking it from going any further. Kind of like painting.

What is happening is that I am trying to make a bat. When I apply the stain to half of the bat is seeps to far and I have to sand it to death to get rid of it. I am wondering if there is a better way to contain it. I have been using masking tape and a tape called gator tape but its not very good.

Cover the borders in shellac first.

I’m still guessing you’re using a dye. You can mask a stain successfully, but dyes actually penetrate the wood and soak across the grain. That said, I do not know of an easy way to stop that from happening.
