I was hoping to find some nice but economic socket chisels such that I could remove the handles and turn my own. I want quality first, budget second. I currently own a set of Craftsman bench chisels that I abuse and a set of 6 Irwin Blue chip bench chisels with the blue handles.

I like the Irwins but just tried to break the handle off so that I could turn a new set…The handles really are as advertised – indestructible. I beat the hell out of it. I almost cut my hand off trying to break them and only succeeded in putting a few marks and dents in the handle.

I like the set of Two Cherries bench chisels but wouldn’t want to break the handles off and they aren’t socket type anyway. That being said, if there is a good set of chisels out there, in the $100-$200 price range, I don’t really “need” to make my own handles.

Also, what about these for $100?

Thanks and happy Advent/Christmas.

That set of Buck Bros looks awesome – very hard to find a complete set like that, and of that vintage. I say go for it!

The Irwin blue chips have a tang, not a socket. There’s a video on Popular Woodworking about turning a new handle for them.

If a socket chisel is what you’re looking for, those Buck Bros definitely look like a good option. You might also look for an old set of Stanley 750s. In terms of modern chisels, you could try Stanley’s new version of the 750s:

The only other socket chisel set I know of are the Lie-Nielsen’s and they’re not in the 100-200 range.
