I’m building a chest for my niece. I’m planning on doing a rail and stile with panels.
I’m locked into purpleheart for the frame, but the panels are what I’m waffling on.
I have some nice soft maple of about common quality. And a source for some very nice curly maple but at a steep price.
My other options are hickory, ash, cherry, and aromatic cedar.
My original plan was to use the classic maple/purpleheart combination with a cedar lining. But I got to thinking.
I have to resaw the panels either way but I think I’ll have to resaw the cedar too. The supplier I use has some REALLY red cedar. So if I went that way it would cut down my resaw by half, but I’m worried about looks.
Has anyone seen purple heart and red cedar together?
Or how realistic would it be to veneer onto a cedar panel?
