G’day LJ’s.

Most of us here want to be tracked by our buddies but would rather not have our movements and choices registered by companies. I am using a small, free program called Ghostery now to stop them. When the program kicks in (instantly and seamlessly) you can see by a short flash on your screen just how many people are after your data. Ghostery stops some 1200 companies from peeking at your habits and has the added benefit of eliminating a lot of ads as well (works everywhere too! not just on the best woodworking site on the net). Highly recommended.

From their website:

“Ghostery™ sees the invisible web – tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.

After showing you who’s tracking you, Ghostery™ also gives you a chance to learn more about each company it identifies. How they describe themselves, a link to their privacy policies, and a sampling of pages where we’ve found them are just a click away.

Ghostery™ allows you to block scripts from companies that you don’t trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and
iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands”.

Note: Sometimes you will need to disable it or a particular tracker to see search results or comments on a site. Easy to do, and then just reload.
Extra note: 12 companies tried to track this post! See ya!

I’ve been using Ghostery for over a year now and have 1269 trackers on my block list. New ones pop up every day it seems and so I update my ‘definitions’ regularly. Most of the trackers are benign… but the principle of it bugs me.

Thanks! I’ve just wandered though most of my favourites and it’s scary what comes up.

Best regards, Doe

I’ve been using the above for about 2 years now, and the program has stopped over 90,000 trackers.
