I know it sounds simple, but I can’t find replacement brackets for an exterior shelf at local hardware stores or even on the Internet. The shelf is immediately below our kitchen window against a stucco wall and is made of two 8” x 1.5” x 6’ boards. The existing bracket is 16” x 16” x 1.5” wide. A 0.5” square brace helps support the weight. I would like to locate the same bracket, which I bought at a local hardware store about 10 years ago. If not available, suggestions of an alternative hanging method would be appreciated.

Of note, I located several brackets that were close, but were either too long ( 20”) or two short ( 14” ). Significant strength is important, since it supports flower pots, etc.

hate to say it but your existing bracket doesn’t appear to be 16” on the horizontal side. If your shelf is truly 2 8” inch pieces (16” total), I would say your brackets are the 14” variety since they don’t come to the edge.

yours appear to be the Stanley type (I think a small elephant could sit on those…pretty thick steel with the support brace welded in). you should be fine with a 14” depth since only a bit of overhang.

Teejk, thanks for replying.

Yes, the boards are true 8” wide and both brackets are, and need to be, 16” long. The horizontal bracket appears to be 2” shorter in the picture because the window’s sill extends out that far, making the total distance from the wall to the front of the shelf 18”.

Using your Stanley referance, I did locate an acceptable replacement bracket (16” x 18”) listed under their Closet Storage & Shelf section.

ok…I didn’t see the sill.

google [stanley shelf brackets 16”x 16”]...you’ll find a selection there in the 16” width (but maybe not the height (you really don’t need it)).

your shelf boards are looking a little “wavy”. and I would be a little worried about your shelf meeting the sill (sounds like a recipe for rot unless there is a gap to let the sill drain and breath). perhaps time for an upgrade? shouldn’t cost you much.

Have your say...
