Hi Guys & Gals,

I have an old socket type chisel that I want to replace the handle on.

I can find LOADS of sites on the web on how to make a new handle and even more on how to fit it.

BUT

I cannot find any that deal with how to get the old one off.

I am tempted to put it into my vice and grimp the handle with a HUGE spanner I have, but I am such an oaf I am frightened that I will rip the socket of the chisel rather tahn the wooden handle out of the socket.

Anyone have any thoughts?

The chisel is a 2” Marple bevel chisel, the handle looks to be boxwood or something similar

Thanks

Maybe you could put it in a vice and try and split the handel with another chissel?

split it out or drill it out. you may have to combine the 2! I just did this with an old 2” slick. I split it and cut half of the handle off then drilled several 1/4” holes carefully so as not to wreck the socket. then with vise grips wiggled the rest out. when I turned the new one to fit the socket I then cut a slot in it with the band saw and made a wedge to spread it. I placed the wedge in the socket and drove the new handle in. as I drove it in the wedge made it a tight fit.
