There is a 1950’s Delta Shaper for sale near me on Craigslist for $950.00 Model #86-3081. I couldn’t find any information on this of tool. It has reversible motor, 1/2 inch spindle and wide selection of HSS 3 wing knives. Is anyone familiar with this machine, and does that seem like a good price.

I don’t see any reference to that number over here:

Maybe it’s the serial number? It sounds high to me, but you’d have to look at what a new machine with comparable specs costs. If new is a couple of grand and this is half that, I’d say it would be worth looking at if you need a shaper that large. I would think 650-700 would be more in line but if it comes with a ton of knives, is probably fairly priced.

Reversible motor suggests the big one, and I’m guessing the cartridge will also accomodate a 3/4 spindle or a router bit adapter. Heckuva machine, and if it’s like my old one, the logo is art deco.

The price seems fair but not a great deal. If there is no work, even cleanup, to get it in service, it is a very good buy in my estimation. This tool (if it’s the one I’m thinking) also takes the standard cast iron extension on the back which is a boon for shaping curved and large parts.

Now I’m really curious…

This is the sort of machine you’re looking at:

I’d say $400-$500 is more like it, but if the selection
of cutters is really nice they could be worth something
to you. Resale value of steel 1/2” cutters is not that

Motor rating matters too. A 3HP shaper outperforms
a 1.5hp shaper by more than 100%. It’s more like
250% more capable.

I am familiar with that machine. $950 is way too much, even with the asstd hss cutters. The early deltas are nice machines, but the light dutys dont have a lot going for them plus they are not too user friendly. (deltas light duty split fence in particular). Not much knife capacity. Probably would be worth maybe 75 bucks to me so I could use the motor on something else. The cutters are trash. Nice try seller ! JB
