Looking at taking advantage on these sales going on. I am tossed between the PM 15”/Byrd cutterhead and the Grizzly G0453Z 15” spiral cutterhead planer. The cost difference 914 dollars if you include grizzly shipping. I can pick up the PM at my local Woodcraft.

I have read most of the reviews and was wondering from owners if you are still satisfied. I have the grizzly 12” spiral jointer and the cutter knives would be interchangeable (I think) and that’s a plus. Anyhow, any feedback would be great. I currently have the DW 735 which is a great planer.

Add local and State sales tax to the Woodcraft price to get apples to apples. Get the biggest and baddest that your budget will allow. You won’t be disappointed with the PM, but if you are happy with the quality of your Grizz jointer, why cough up the extra grand for the PM? Can you use the extra dough to upgrade to the 20” Grizz? Just thinking out loud. I think that personally I would get the Grizz 15” and invest the extra $1000 or so in something else, or just bank it (gasp!) for my next purchase

Shoot you are correct, I forgot about the taxes. I would like to go with the 20” but I think the 5hp will trip my breaker. I have one 30amp 220 outlet in my garage and I run my 3hp TS and 3hp jointer off it, but not at the same time. A friend of mine installed the 220 and I have no room in the box to add any more.

The Grizzly Planers are very nice machines. I bought the G0453 over 4 years ago (before the G0453Z) was offered and installed Grizzly’s spiral cutterhead on it 2 years ago. I have had no issues whatsoever. Spending another $1,000 just to have the name “Powermatic” seems like an unnecessary expense. If I were in your shoes, I would buy the G0453Z and use that extra grand on something else or buy the 20” Grizzly planer.
