If you get the frequent “E-Direct Special” offers from Peachtree, and occasionally order from them, beware of a bug in their ordering system I just encountered. Here is how it went wrong for me:

A few weeks ago, they had an offer for some router bits. I started an order, picked out a few bits, put them in the cart, but eventually decided there wasn’t enough interesting to order to get over the shipping cost. I just went on with my business, not bothering to clear the cart.

Last week, another offer came out. They have a front vise mechanism with quick release, at a 45% discount. I also needed a sanding drum, so I add that to the cart, enter the discount code, and check out. I have two items in the cart, $80 or so total including shipping.

I get a confirmation email from them, which has two items, correct shipping, correct total.

Boxes show up yesterday. Got the items I ordered, but also in the box are the bits I didn’t order. I look at the packing list, and it shows the two items I ordered, plus three bits at full price, a higher shipping fee and $140 total.

I go check my credit card account – yup, they charged me for the bits.

So I call them. No problem they say, send back the bits, we’ll credit you for them.
Uh, you blew it, you want me to ship them back, at my expense, and you only credit me for the (full price) of the bits. We’ll, they say they will credit the shipping difference. We’ll see.

Clearly this is a software bug. It’s nasty, because they show the correct total on the web page, they send an email with the correct order, but they charge and ship old cart content as well as the new order. There may be some other factor here, because otherwise, I can’t be the first person who hit this. It may have nothing to do with “E-direct specials”.

I don’t think the customer service rep understood what the problem is. I offered to send them the email I got showing the correct order. Not interested. I have no faith they will fix the problem any time soon.

So, beware. There is a way to get back your old cart. You may be able to use it and delete the items before placing a new order. I always thought their shopping cart system was more than a bit hokey.

Now I have to pack up the bits and mail the package back to them. Not a good customer experience.

The vise looks pretty nice, but the instructions are lacking. I’ll write a review when I get it mounted on a bench (yet to be built).
