I’m thinking of making my own parquet floors, both for a project and to save some money. I want something different for a 350 sf sunroom than strip oak and I can’t afford some of the patterns that are commercially available at $12 – $20 per foot.

Are there any resources that are available for patterns, jigs, proper angles, etc., that could help me with this idiotic, overly ambitious project?

Thanks! (And feel free to either encourage or dissuade me.) ;-)

Debbie – Ha! Thanks for the encouragement. I hope that not that many people see this so when I punk out and do something different, there won’t be a whole lot of nyah, nyah, told ya so!

Wayne, I already saw those earlier (before I signed up for the forum) and they’re a gorgeous example of a commercial floor. That appears to be a Bordeaux pattern. Beautiful, isn’t it?

However, I want something a little different. I’m not sure what, though. That’s why I’m looking for geometric patterns and tips on how to make them.

Interesting. I never considered quilting patterns, but yes, they could work…if they’re not too complicated. I was thinking of Islamic geometrics, or mosaics of some sort, which I suppose, might be found in quilting.

Thanks for the suggestion. Are there resources that you know of? Free drawings, etc. that could be replicated?

there are lots of quilt magazines that come with actual-size patterns. They would be great

I’d get a quilt magazine and skim through it to get an idea of what to look for online. Check out the “old” quilt patterns. They are more geometric than many of the modern quilt designs.
I used to have a quilt magazine around so I’ll have a look. I probably gave it to my Mom, the quilter, though

An end grain floor is beautiful, & you can do it yourself. Check this out.

Thanks for the welcomes, guys.

Dick, I had a shop class years ago that had endgrain elm. I thought at that time it would be an incredible floor but I couldn’t see cutting a whole bunch of 2×4s to achieve it! Now look what I’m planning. Ha!

Looking forward to being a member and getting to you all y’all.

The article that Manta mentioned is very interesting. I wish my wife like parquet. I am planning on turning a bunch of pallets into our new bedroom floor and I thought that would be a great way to go.
