Topic tags/keywords: question blade tablesaw

So i bought a Freud Dado and I’ve never setup a dado. This may seem sorta basic but I’m guessing that

1. You find out which blades you need for the width you want
2. Put the two 1/8 blades on the outside and the chippers on the inside.
3. Make sure no teeth are touching each other.
4. Cut your dado.

My concern is that the teeth will move while cutting and run into each other.

As long as i tighten everything am I ok???

Am I missing anything??

You know Brad, I have been using a stacked dado for about 5 years and every time I set it up I worry about the chippers moving and running into each other. Hasn’t happened yet ;)

You have it right. Don’t get too paranoid and tighten it more than you would any other blade. Run some shallow Dados and get the feel for it. Also, make a few zero clearance inserts so you will have one for each common size (1/4, 1/2, 3/4).

Tightening it should do the job. Never overdoooo it.

They wont spin and hit each other. I use my dado blades often and never had a problem.

right on… thanks

I did grab some zero clearance inserts at Rockler last time i was up there so i did make a 1/2” today. Worked fine and it makes a nice dado!

Enjoy,

BTW, making your own zero clearance inserts is a breeze. Get some 1/2” luan and use the factory plate as a template to rout out the profile, then use some little set screws to make levelers so you can make the thing level with the table. I make them all the time. Sure beats $25 a pop for such a disposable item.

I had a bad experience with my dado set. Fortunately it resulted in only damaging several carbide tips. From what I could determine, I did not tighten the arbor nut tight enough. So I had a lot of metal flying around when the various blades began slipping. I do not want to repeat that mistake. I definitely will tighten the nut tighter than I would normally for a single blade.

Does anyone have a method for how tight to torque the arbor nut with a dado set up without over tightening?
