Hi all.

I have been trying to come up with a shopping list for a starter kit for screws. I’m Sick and tired of the local hardware stores being out of stock of fastners.

Can anyone suggest a good production screw that can be used in mdf, sheetgoods and hardwood? and a supplier?

MDF, huh? Not my favorite material for screws! Whenever I ask myself that question I go here: http://www.mcfeelys.com/find-a-fastener.asp This is an automated screw “finder”. You enter in the screw material, thickness, and a couple other possible variables and it shows you what they recommend. There screws aren’t cheap, so I don’t buy there too much unless it is a special fastener, but they are one of the more known authorities on fastening. Click on the FAQ for any question you could possibly have about screw selection. Good luck.

Yeah, I have to agree with Jeff. The best screws for MDF are confirmat screws used for particle board, but again, not my favorite as MDF is basically a paper product so it just doesn’t hold fasteners very well at all. I have had good luck with the confirmat’s. As for other screws, generally #8 in 1, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, and 2 inches will do you. If you get a pocket hole jig, get the ones suggested by the manufacturer and otherwise the find-fastner link above.

Look up quick screws. They are a good commercial grade product. Lots of different suppliers carry them.
I’ve never had any special problems with MDF and screws.

Woodworkers supply has them. I like the general purpose with the combo drive. The combo drive dosn’t work very well for phillips, but I find they are just fine for the square drive. I’m a bit fan of square drive screws.
