Hey Lumberjocks,
I was hoping some of you might be able to give me some insight on a few things. I’m fairly new to woodworking and have mostly made canoe paddles, small projects, a few simple kitchen cabinets and a clock. I have limited knowledge when it comes to furniture building, but would love to take on a new project: building a nice table for my fiancĂ© and I.

This is where I need your help, fellow Lumberjocks! I’d like to build something similar to the trestle table that I’ve uploaded. The table top I can do, but I need help with the square pedestals. I assume they are 4×4 pedestals with essentially moulding around, but… has anybody made anything like this before? I can’t find any info about it anywhere, nor have I ever seen any moulding planes large enough to plane the middle section of the pedestal.
If I’m totally up the creek, please teach me the ways!

Also, for the feet, if I cut them with a bandsaw, what would you recommend for prepping the wood for finishing? I’ve tried wrapping a large dowel in sandpaper before (on a tambour style mantle clock), but that was useless…. took WAY too long! I have a flat sole spokeshave, but thats useless on concave surfaces.

Thanks ahead of time for all your help! I’d love to be able to help in return, but I have much learning to do before I can give advice!
