I see a used Central Machinery 6” belt / 9” disc stationary sander for $165…but I’m hearing good things about the Ridgid oscillating belt sander for $199…..how do I choose? I want to do small woodcrafts for sale or gifting.

Central Machinery is the Horror Fright house brand. Best use would be as a boat anchor. The Ridgid is Home Depots house brand. IMO the Ridgid is a “little” better and I have heard good things about them. I would never own one however. I am not into the new shiny, plastic, disposible tools. But if I were to buy one it would be the Ridgid.

The ridgid has quite a following, as does some of HF’s tools.
Both are different in this case though.

I’d personally go for the ridgid and save up for a nicer 6×48 belt/disc sander.

I just pitched an almost-new Central bench sander (4 incher) into the trash. This is not meant to be a knock on HF or on other Central tools. I just hated this sander.

All the time I see Central Machinery belt/disc sander for sale on craigslist. In the last decade or so I can count on half of one hand the number of times I have seen the Ridgid OSS offered for sale on craigslist. While your local results might vary, that fact in itself tells me that the owners of the Ridgid OSS are very happy with their purchase, I know I am.

Signals are getting mixed here. The OP asked about ” 6” belt / 9” disc stationary sander for $165…but I’m hearing good things about the Ridgid oscillating belt sander.”

It would be good general knowledge to know why TeamTurpin so ceremoniously pitched his. I have a hunch it was vibration. A good tool is well balanced. A heavy tool (cast iron) has the ability to absorb some vibration.

A sander which bounces, even a tiny amount, will be a real frustrator. Might make me want to grab it and look around for the nearest metal trash container that will make a resounding thump upon receipt of some avoirdupois.

Kindly,

Lee

Well, I replied to the CM seller, the price is negotiable and now that I see the new price is 199 I think 165 is no where near what I would pay. The listing for the Ridgid is poor….but a good price at 80.
