I am developing a strategy for the construction of my coming grandchild’s crib. Can I inconvenience you for an opinion? I purchased plans for the heirloom crib from Rockler and plan to make a small modification. The structural members of the piece will be in cherry, and the slats in maple. However, for the end pieces I want to use burled maple panels instead of slats, to give the piece a touch of (I think) elegance. I thought about using bookmatched pieces, but then I run into “I dont have than kind of equipment” because I would have to buy a big chunk of wood and resaw it myself. So I thought why not buy veneer and glue it onto a 3/8” piece of MDF and put it in as an insert. I know that Woodcraft sells burled maple veneers that are cut in sequence, and they are not too expensive. Since they are sequenced, the inside and outside of the end panels could be made to look like I actually resawed a block of burled maple. Is this a good idea, or am I deluding myself? And, if I am not deluding myself (I hope not, cause I already bought the sequenced veneers), what is the best strategy for a glue up? Is Titebond good enough so that my grandchild can use the crib for their own children? Any ideas will be most appreciated by the little Slacker… -- There are three kinds of people... those who can count, and those who can't |
