Topic tags/keywords: question of the night 8708 desert

Okay…if you dont know why I am throwing this out there——DONT WORRY ABOUT IT…TRUST ME…just enjoy the question, the responses, and most of all the COMRADERIE of just being an LJ…

Todays question will be…hmmm…”if you were stuck in middle of the desert…and you could only have one tool with you…what would it be and why?” Boys and girls make sure you use complete sentences and GSP does count in your response (grammar/spelling/punctuation).

My response:

If I was stuck in the desert I think I would want my 8 pound axe/sledge combo tool. I could use this for protection of all slooooow animals…but more importantly I could use it open up cacti (depending on the type of desert) where I may be able to find moisture. I could also find a dry river bed and may be able to dig down into the earth to find moisture under the surface of the ground.

It also could be used to help me build a shelter.

Okay…I didnt have much time to think of my response…since I posted the darn question…let me go to sleep (that is from the west coast of the united states) and wake up in the morning and I will have a second response.

What is wrong with you? You could have at least stranded us on a tropical Island where we could cut up trees. And does the tool come with a power generator? If not… a chain saw so I could at least cut dead wood into planks and make rustic furniture. And a plane. O.K. So that’s two tools.

I agree, you can’t ask a bunch of woodworkers an “only one tool” question and not give them any wood! But okay…

If I found myself stranded in the middle of the desert, I’d choose to have with me a shovel. It’s good enough as a weapon, you can shade your head with it, and you can use it to search for buried treasure while you wait to die of heat stroke.

A single tool, a “mechanical implement, usually held in the hand {Oxford dictionary}” well how about a helicopter with a full tank of gas and the GPS set to the nearest pub for a cold beer! If the other guys can build some fires and make some smoke, with their shovels, axes and chainsaws, I will pick them up on the way, but only if they want a cold beer?

A helicopter is a tool (it moves things from A to B, like a wheel barrow, but with a few extra parts) and you certainly have to hold it with your hand to fly it.

I would like a fork, so I could eat my way out of the dessert, mmm strawberries, oh you said desert…um, um, um, my towel, cause there would be copius amounts of sweating, you can blindfold yourself and not see the danger or immiment death, you could store dried out sauces on there for nourishment, you could towel whip someone, use it as a flag to raise awareness of the dangers of getting yourself stranded in a desert in the first place.

To borrow a slang term from my 19-year-old daughter, I’d hope for a “tool” driving a dune buggy to take me back to civilization.

If I was stranded in a desert, in the SW, I would want a screw driver so I could tighten a few loose screws.

Rich is right…. according to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy a Towel is the most massively useful thing you can have with you.

I would want the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Team, they are already tanned so you don’t have to worry about them whinning about getting sunburned like you would with Dadoo’s ideal “tool”.

BUT, if I had to have a tool-tool I would pick a good ole army e-tool (entrenching tool), so many uses: so little time.

I’d want (no surprise, here) a Shopsmith. The single tool thats actually 5 woodworking tools in one. I’m not really sure just what I’d do with the 5 tools in the desert, but at least I’d have gotten the most bang for my buck. -SST
