I have never been able to figure out how the top three are chosen, but now that I am back after my brief hiatus out of the shop, it is just really messed up.
Please explain how the ranking works or remove it. I used to be able to look at it and have a pretty good guess as to what rank a project I liked would be. Now I am clueless. There are projects getting 40,000 post in an hour and things like that.
Seems there's a computer gone wild scenario. Not exactly sure how the whole thing works, but it has completely screwed up the top 3 viewing. I doesn't seem to be any individual, happens. Randomly. I know it's been pointed out to management. Hopefully fixed soon. I quit watching the top 15 as they aren't "real" numbers supporting it.
When it first started it took a while to figure out. It seemed they took hours on, likes, views, and comments and came up with a magic formula a presto TOP 15. Seems like there has been a disturbance in the force and things are now out of balance.
Who knows.
I wish I had time to go back to writing the blogs. They were a lot more fun. Now it feels almost like a chore to post projects. That being said, I should have 2 more posted today and the insides of the burl box posted.
I'm not sure how it is calculated, but I know every project I have had in the top 3 had relatively low views (well under a thousand in each case within 24 hours of posting, I believe my last one was under 400), a moderate amount of comments, and a lot of "favorites", so there is something more to it than views, but I guess obscenely high view counts can get you there.
I'd like to see the algorithm used and how each criteria is weighted. I am assuming "favorites" carry the most weight.
I'd like to see it also. Just so that everyone would know how to "vote". Personally I use favorites when I want to remember how to do something or want to try something. I don't use it as a "voting" factor. Oh well.
Same here JoeyG. I don't think it's a catalyst for voting, however in my experience, I think it carries A LOT of weight to "Top 3" status. And it should.
1 - You can't favorite your own stuff
2 - you can't favorite more than once (you can view or comment more than once)
3 - If someone "Favorited" your project, it deserves to move up the ranks. I have a very small collection of favorites.
Also, I would assume, but would like to know for sure, that comments on your own projects are excluded from metrics. It would be a good experiment to post a piece of wood with the title of "Please ignore this, it's a top 3 test" in the projects section and see if you single handedly can get it to the top 3.
To add to this, I know people are competitive in nature, and competition is good. It drives quality and better output in a lot of cases. I really don't care if my projects make it to the top 3. I am proud of them and I want to share them. It does really irk me when "projects" like a collection of pallet wood, or questions about "what kind of wood is this" make it, and something like this masterpiece does not (from my favorites) http://lumberjocks.com/projects/66106
I completely agree with you. That's a beautiful box. I have several top 3 banners, and I am good if I don't get another one. I just want to know how it's done. It drives me crazy. LOL. I like to see if I can predict what a project will do, be it mine or someone else's and it's nigh on impossible to do it any more.
Maybe I just need another cup of coffee and another board.
Your test run sounds interesting. It would probably get #1 just because of the name. Maybe I should try it. LOL
I am not what qualifies. The very few I have had make it to top 3 I didn't feel were even vaguely my best work. Just what catches the peoples attention.
In addition, I do see reasoning behind keeping the formula "secret". That way it makes it harder to influence your projects standing. However I would highly suggest heavily reducing the weighting on view count. In many cases, the views in 24 hours exceed the amount of logged in registered users. Either foul play is at foot (not assuming it is, but shame on you if that is the case), or there is some sort of external influence like search engine cashing picking up on keywords.
