You bought a transitional plane. They are usually marked either on the very front of the wood body, sometimes the side, or on the iron. $20 is on the high side but certainly within reason if the wood is in as good of a shape as it looks. I don't think it's a Stanley, maybe a Sargent or union but it's hard to tell.
As for the brace, depending on what it is, you either got a good deal or a great deal.
We'll need better plc's and more information to make a positive ID.
The brace was labeled when I bought it, but they cut the label off! The only mark on it is something that looks like 3 kayak paddles crossed over each other in sort of a six-petaled floral emblem. Since I paid $15 for my previous brace, I figured I couldn't pass this one up at $4. It is in fine shape, IMO.
I didn't even notice it before but the plane has a very faint marking on the front. It appears to be a Zenith 776 KK, 18" It's got rough spots-small cracks from the mouth and a few cracks elsewhere, but it appears serviceable.
I don't know much about Zenith. A quick search showed some were made by Sargent, who also made some of the Keen Kutters. This was probably made by Sargent, and should clean up just fine. Match the cp lever with some marched Sargent. Sargent had its own design on the cap, so that will tell you for sure.
That "six pedalled flower pattern" is one of a company called Worth. Part of PEXTO co. Worth was just the Brand name, hard to tell what company was the builder.
