rip saw

I didn’t even know what that was, so I Googled it and discovered that you can spend $8400.00 on a ripsaw. Yikes.
I was feeling a little bad over spending $7.00 to have an old Simonds ripsaw reset and sharpened. I am really out of touch with the world of woodworking tools.
Sometimes when I really want to “rip it up”, I’ll run some boards through the old shopsmith the long way….that seems to do the trick.
There’s a whole ‘nother world of tools out there that is waaay beyond me.
And now, on a more serious note, (and I mean this…I’m really clueless about this) what do you use this for? (Oh. I know, ripping, but why…is this for production work, or ??? -SST
